The main entrance to the center is in the rear
and easily accessible from the parking area.

Located at 219 West Liberty Street, the Sumter County Genealogical Society is housed in the historic Carnegie Library. The Carnegie was built in 1917 and used as the Sumter County public library until 1968.

The Genealogical and Historical Research Center, which houses the Sumter County Genealogical Society upstairs and the Sumter County Museum Archives downstairs, opened in this historic building in January of 1994.

The Sumter County Genealogical Society has more than 6,300 items
available for research into genealogy.

Books and periodicals are located in the public areas.

Microfilm, CD-ROMS, delicate and other items are located
in the staff area where a volunteer can assist.

Items can be searched by title or subject in the card catalog.

The Research Center has microfilm, microfiche and CD-ROM's
which contain census and other materials useful to the genealogist.

Volunteers are available to assist genealogists in their research.
They can assist in using the machines, finding microfilm,
and can help researchers in finding materials on local surnames.

Hidden in the back, the archivist works to maintain the collection,
manage the inventory, repair damaged materials,
and make new materials available to the public.
